PROJECT3# iNSPiRATiON: daniel libeskind, roof structure, space aesthetic

libeskinds denver art gallery is surrounded by older buildings and the contrast between old and new, angles and straight lines, metallic and stone is very interesting for me.

libeskinds ability to sculpt forms out of angled shapes is amazing. the complexity in this object interests me and was perhaps one of my most influential inpsirations. the form is refined yet chaotis, and brings together abstraact pieces in a beautiful way.

the angles and slope of the interior tectonics completely dictate the boundaries of the space. The language of his buildings is almost devoid of any straight lines what so ever, adn every space has its own individual character that communicates with the purpose of the room, symbolically and aesthetically. the art gallery is essentially an artwork in itself but i feel that it doesnt compete with the artworks/displays integrity due to the material choice.

Inspiration for how the roof could be structured. the daniel libeskind form is cut with lazers and its mathematical worked out and i think that to simplify it for myself, something along these lines would work better.

PROJECT3# Artists and Gallery Owner/ Client Profile

Upon walking down King St, i noticed these people making artworks in the square close to where i had chosen my site. They weren't selling their artworks, but rather giving them away for reasonable donations, and i thought it would be a fantastic idea to create a community art gallery where these artists could create their artworks as well as have people view them.

To me, the context that they are in is quite a social one, so i would like the gallery to become a place where social events could be held for young artists and people in the community, to celebrate their artworks, and also socialise in other ways.

The gallery owner would be a single man in his early 40s who had interests in promoting these struggling artists wellbeing and creating a place where many artists from all over newtown could exhibit their works... I imagine that he would have these interests as he would have lived newtown his whole life and have lived in a similar fashion when he was their age. Whether or not he ever became a successful artist himself is irrelevant, it is more that he wants to create a place where people can come together and celebrate all the arts, rather than be exclusive and overly private.

(a graffiti artist using the gallery space as a workshop - this gave me the idea to actively combine the process of making art with the process of exhibitng, selling and celebrating art)

(the MTV gallery, Darlinghurst - an example of a gallery that displays young artists from around the inner sydney city region, holding one of their social events at night)

The Gallery owner's residence therefore needs to be actively engaged with the space and art gallery so I would want visual connection between his flat and also the gallery space.
The workshop is going to be in very close promiximity to the exhibition space, maybe even in the exhibition space, so that artworks can be created and viewed at the same time.
I want the space be dynamic in form, but also in feel and use.

the building i am proposing to remove is the st george bank

the facades of the bordering buildings are beautiful, elegant and tall compared to the short and unrefined facade of the bank. However i do like the contrast between the heights as i feel you can read a relationship between the openings on the outside of the tall buildings, and the height of the bank.

This is an interesting view i found when exploring the street opposite that leads to King St. I really like the way that the building is framed by the others around it and it is such a shame to see such an ugly building at the end of such a lovely visual passageway.

The Front Elevation detailing the frame like windows that allow her to see out from her wwaiting room. There is a signifigant rise in height amongst the three spaces and there isn underground area in the third 'standing' space to make her eye-level at street level

Details the how the inside area relates to the outside area through a horizontal plan sectioned. the arrows indicate how the public would move around the space.

Idea of physical formation of the space

I want the space to have a fluidity and movement to it that is contrasted by the rigidity of the outside skyscrapers. I also want this to represent love and its 'ups and downs' plus lay reference to the symbolic drapery and fruit/rich colours etc that are within the actual painting (all of which are symbols of the fruits of love, which lead me to my initial interpretation of the painting)

An Influence of mine for this idea would be this lamp which has been created in a deconstructionist way, by Zaha Hadid.

To Wait: 1. to stay or rest in expectation; remain in a state of quiescence or inaction, as until something expected happens
2. wait on or upon, a. to perform the duties of an attendant or servant
3. to continue stationary or inactive in expectation of; await
4. the act of waiting or awaiting; delay halt
5. a period or interval of waiting.

I NEED: 3 waiting spaces that have three distinct purposes.... one for sitting, one for pacing, one for standing. inactivity is the key.... windows become the main focal point for the inactivity and the period of inactivity. They are like the visual access to a world outside that she doesnt not know and does not recognise because of her amnesia. the windows must always provide visual contact with the outside room so she can try and recognise the lover than she waits for, despite not knowing who he is.
THE CHARACTER: she is lost, contained, inactive, confused, anxious but finds everything repetitive.
CIRCULATION: horizontal space with run-on effects but integrity to each individual waiting space is needed. the size of each space needs to be determined by the amount of space needed for each type of waiting. ie: standing needs more vertical less horizontal, walking needs heaps of horizontal and the same vertical as standing, sitting needs small vertical and medium horizontal.

SITE: busy city perhaps new york city, where young women are often forgotten, situated above a busy street or in a lane where where there is direct linear outside circulation coming from only two directions, that is, both ends of the space. the space should therefore be long and narrow so that it can fit within this narrow street, or laneway. the space cannot stop the flow of outside traffic too much so i need to come up with a way for people to still negotiate themselves around the building without coming in direct contact with the girl, but only quick visual contact. The long horizontal form of my space would be contrasted by the huge overpowering towers adn skyscrapers that make up the city.
